Day Five

We're almost ready to leave the condo. It's 7:51am and we're almost packed. Mom does all the packing. Today we hope to take a different route to Charlotte, depends on what Camilla wants to do! So, goodbye, Myrtle Beach! You were beautiful!

Day Four

Today we left about 10:30 for shopping and a tour of Hopsewee Plantation. We had lunch at a micro brewery and it was very good - no seafood this time. Of course, Mom had a beer. The plantation was beautiful, but the tour was not too good. We did more shopping on the way home. We've done a lot of shopping but not much buying. Haven't seen anything we couldn't live without! We're having dinner in the condo tonight and plan to watch the Spurs game if we can get it. I've printed our boarding passes and Mom has started packing so we will be ready for our long drive to the airport tomorow. We hope to stop in a little town called Wadesboro for more shopping if time permits. We've had a good trip. The weather has turned cold so it's a good time to leave!

Day Three

Today was a lucky day! We got up early and were off to Savannah by 7:15am. We had been gone about an hour or so when Mom saw that she had written in our journal that we would be going to Charleston today. Uh oh. I wasn't sure when I had made the reservations for our tour of Charleston! We were about to call the Visitor Center to find out which day we were scheduled, when my phone rang. It was the Visitor Center lady! She said we were scheduled for today! So we let "Camilla" (GPS) know that we would be going to Charleston instead of Savannah and she directed us there. Then we arrived in time to get on an earlier tour and that made the whole day go easier!
Again, driving was too slow and tedious. We decided that we were not up for going all the way to Savannah tomorrow -- too much driving and not enough time there this trip.
When we got "home", we quickly took another walk on the beach. It's getting cool. Tomorrow is supposed to be quite cold.
Oh! Last night we went to the recommended restaurant. It smelled of smoke and there was no non-smoking section. Needless to say, we were out of there! We found another restaurant that was about the size of a Walmart. It offered a buffet, which we don't like, but the waitress recommended that we share the seafood platter that also included the salad, soup, and dessert bar. OMG! It was so much food that we had some of the leftovers for lunch today and will probably have 1 or 2 meals off of it tomorrow! Luckily it also tasted very good! We have had some type of seafood for every meal except breakfast every day!
Just one of the many beautiful homes in Charleston.
We saw lots of BEAUTIFUL old homes on our tour of Charleston. And we learned alot about the city. One of the most interesting things we learned was that homes like the one above were called "single" homes because they were only as wide as a single room and they had these outside doors that looked like they entered the house, but really only go into the porch (piazza). That way the family could have privacy when sitting on the piazza.

We took a boat out to Ft. Sumter today. Here's Mom on the top of the fort.

Here's Camilla, our GPS! We love her! In the background is the Francis Marion National Forest.

Day Two

This morning we were up by 6:35am. The sunrise over the ocean was very pretty. Mom fixed us yogurt, fruit, and granola parfaits. Then we headed down to the beach for a walk and seashell hunting.

Back at the rooms, we showered and went to check out Myrtle Beach. We walked through stores at Barefoot's Landing, went to the Myrtle Beach Mall where I bought 2 books at Books-A-Million and finally ended up eating lunch at Bass Pro Shop. Mom had a margarita and I had a pina colada, and we had clam chowder and coconut shrimp for lunch. The waitress told us about a very casual place to eat seafood tonight so we went to find it. Yeah, it's VERY casual, but mom says we are eating there. It looks like a dive in a strip center, but, oh well.................

Day One

Ready to go!
Mom in our kitchen.

View from our balcony

Deb dropped us at the airport in San Antonio at about 5:45am. Since we got Mom a wheelchair, we got to skip right through the long security line and board first. We barely had time for coffee and a muffin! The plane ride was good, only a little over 2 hours. Charlotte airport was okay, but I don't recommend Dollar Rent A Car -- very inefficient. We got a Dodge Avenger and decided to get a GPS also. We love that GPS! We call her "Camilla" cause she sounds British.

The drive from Charlotte took us 5 hours! Not because we stopped for lunch and then drinks, but because there weren't interstates on our route and the speed limit was usually 60MPH!!! It never was more than 65MPH! I felt like we were crawling! But the weather was good and the trees were pretty.

The resort is right on the beach and our rooms are very nice. We immediately went to the grocery store to get a few things and Mom is now preparing a recipe she got from Paula Deen. We are so tired and still have to unpack!

Myrtle Beach

I'll soon be off again on another Spring Break adventure. This time just mom and me. On Monday we fly to Charlotte, North Carolina and then drive to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We'll be staying at the Wyndam Westwind Resort, courtesy of Chris and Kate. (It's one of the resorts on their vacation package.) We plan to do some touring in Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. But mostly we plan to eat seafood until we can't stand anymore!

Last week, South Carolina was experiencing ice and snow! We hope that is well over by the time we arrive. We won't mind rain, since we haven't seen any here in Texas for so long, but hopefully no freezing temperatures!

The resort tells me that I will have Internet access in our rooms so I hope you'll be able to keep up with us and communicate if you're interested. We'll only be gone 5 days, so not too much can happen!
